Afterhours

It was a long Monday
after a beautiful weekend
in Minneapolis
seeing friends
now scattered
across the nation and world
and after a late arrival
a friend's lost luggage
and a morning
without coffee
our day was prickly
my patience thin
my girls shifting
slowly
unwillingly
into the
stiff requirements
of a school day
and more than once
words slipped out
the cave of my mouth
that I should have
fastened behind the dam
of my tongue.

But at the end of the day
three little girls
asked to stay behind
to use the computers
so they could work ahead.

It is this hour
between five and six
when we sit together
in the grace
of a finished day
the agenda complete
the giggles welcome.

This is the time of
our second chances.

Oh, yes, I know those days. The words that have come out the "cave of my mouth" could put anyone to shame (I once called a class of mine "a bunch of idiots" - and at the time, I MEANT it).

Love coming to your blog. Your work is about possibilities.

The form amplifies the words here. These are my favorite lines:

"and more than once
words slipped out
the cave of my mouth
that I should have
fastened behind the dam
of my tongue."

Em, so strange...I sat to write that it is so good to hear your voice again...and find that anna has already beat me too it...but it is good to hear it...it has calmed me and makes me believe again in those moments of peace and grace that we are given in the course of a day...I love you

This is such a wonderful comparison-
words to junk food, to those things we aren't supposed to like but we love them secretly...

glad I stopped by- inspiring.

"...words slipped out the cave of my mouth that I should have fastened behind the dam of my tongue" - perfectly said. I certainly had days like this last week.
